01/08/2010 UPDATE:  H1N1 Vaccine Available to Everyone

NOTE:  Westport Weston Health District never received, and did NOT utilize, any of the H1N1 vaccine that has been recalled.   Certain pediatric vaccine is being recalled due to lack of potency.  Click here for information regarding the recall.

We are now able to offer H1N1 vaccine to anyone over the age of 6 months who wishes to be vaccinated.   Click Here to Jump to WWHD Clinic Information.

Which Form of the Vaccine May I Receive?

Both injection and nasal spray vaccine are available.

You may receive the NASAL SPRAY if you can answer YES to ALL three questions below:

1.  I am not pregnant nor do I think I might be pregnant.

2.  I am between the ages of 2 - 49 years.

3.  I do NOT have any chronic, underlying medical conditions.

Anyone over the age of 6 months may receive the INJECTION.

Both the Westport Weston Health District and the Wilton Health Department continue to receive both injectable and nasal spray vaccine.  Note: Nasal spray is preservative-free; it does NOT contain thimerosal.  Currently, the vast majority of injectable vaccine we have been provided DOES contain thimerosal.  We currently have a small amount of preservative-free injectable vaccine licensed for age 3 and older, but cannot guarantee that it will continue to be available.  We continue to order injectable that is thimerosal-free.  Also, please note that all influenza vaccines are egg-based and we cannot administer to those with chicken or egg allergies.  Individuals who are egg-allergic may have their allergist contact us regarding vaccine availability for their patients.

Where Can I Get Vaccinated?

See below for Option A (Private providers in our area) or Option B (Public clinics in Westport, Weston, and Wilton)

Option A:  Vaccine may be available in our area at the following private healthcare providers (for their CURRENT patients) and at area retailers.  Check with each provider to determine any out-of-pocket costs for vaccination.

More Information regarding H1N1 Vaccination....

FAQs regarding our H1N1 clinics:

  • How many doses do I need?  Those 10 years of age and older only need one dose.  Those under 10 will need a second dose 4 weeks after their first dose.
  • What if I just got the seasonal flu vaccine?  You can get both vaccines at any time, UNLESS you are receiving the nasal spray for BOTH.  Nasal sprays, whether for seasonal or H1N1 flu, must be given at least 4 weeks apart.
  • Are there residency requirements?   These clinics are intended for residents of the towns above, as indicated.  Vaccine is allocated by the state based upon the populations we serve.
  • Does the vaccine contain the preservative thimerosal?  The FluMist nasal spray does NOT contain thimerosal.  Most of the injectable vaccine currently in stock does contain thimerosal.  We will continue to order thimerosal-free injectable vaccine, but cannot predict it's availability at any given clinic.
  • What about individuals allergic to chicken or eggs?  All formulations of the H1N1 vaccine are egg-based and we cannot administer to those with chicken or egg allergies.  Individuals who are egg-allergic may have their allergist contact us regarding vaccine availability for their patients.
  • Will I need to pay for the vaccine?  No, the vaccine is provided at no cost by the federal government.  Healthcare insurance is NOT required, although some clinics may charge an administration fee to your healthcare insurance, if available.

If you are looking for more information regarding H1N1 or availability of vaccine outside of our area, contact the CT Department of Public Health H1N1 Hotline at 800-830-9426 (Available M-F, 7a.m.-7 p.m).  You can also find available clinics by calling 211.

The novel H1N1 vaccine will only protect you from novel H1N1 flu, not the seasonal flu.
