Use deer-resistant plantings

Pictures of some deer-resistant plants

Deer are a critical component of the deer tick’s reproductive cycle. Don’t attract deer to your tick safe zone by planting flowers, shrubs or trees they like to eat.

No plant is completely resistant from deer damage. The preference for certain plants can change from herd to herd and from season to season. Susceptibility depends on deer density and availability of other food sources.

Generally, deer do not like aromatic plants such as lavender or other plants with a strong fragrance (such as sage). These are often grey-foliaged plants that like to grow in sun.

Deer also avoid plants that are thorny, poisonous, have thorns or stickers, milky sap, and a strong taste.
