What about pesticides?

Research shows that pesticides are a reliable and effective way to reduce ticks, particularly when combined with tick safe zone principles. A single application of a low-toxicity pesticide around the edge of your tick safe zone in mid-May or early June can reduce nymphal tick numbers by 80-90%. This is usually sufficient, however, applicators may suggest more than one application.  No more than three applications are recommended.

If you choose to use pesticides, select the least toxic product.

  • Consider an organic or synthetic product in the chemical class called pyrethrums.
  • Remember to follow directions and to use pesticides sparingly.
  • No pesticide is 100% safe.

The decision to use pesticides on your property is up to you. Call the state Department of Environmental Protection Pesticide Program to see if applicator firms are registered and if they employ individuals who are licensed to spray for ticks.
