WWHD Annual Rabies Vaccination Clinic Is Scheduled for June 6

Has your dog or cat been vaccinated for rabies?  The Westport Weston Health District and the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association are holding a low cost rabies vaccination clinic for dogs and cats on Saturday, June 6, from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. at the Westport Weston Health District, 180 Bayberry Lane, Westport.

The cost for vaccination is $15 per animal, cash only.  There is no residency requirement.  All dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers.  Pet owners who are on public assistance are permitted to have one pet vaccinated at no charge by showing their State Public Assistance Identification Cards to the Clinic Coordinator.

Bring the animal’s prior vaccination records, if available.  Written proof, either a valid rabies certificate or dog license showing a prior vaccination, must be presented to qualify for a three-year vaccination.  Otherwise, a one-year vaccination will be given.  Collar tags and certificates of vaccination will be provided.

Rabies is a viral infection that attacks the central nervous system of warm-blooded animals.  The virus is transmitted in the saliva of infected animals, usually through a skin puncture or open wound.  It is fatal to both animals and humans if left untreated. Post exposure vaccinations are available for humans but must be given before the onset of symptoms, as there is no cure once symptoms appear. Connecticut law requires all dogs and cats three months of age or older to be vaccinated against rabies.

WWHD Announces New Travel Clinic Hours

Beginning June 3, 2009, the Westport Weston Health District Travel Clinic will be held on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.and one evening a month, by appointment.  Since 1998, this full-service travel clinic has offered client-centered pre-travel counseling, travel immunizations, yellow fever international certificates, and prescriptions for preventive medications.

According to the Office of Travel and Tourism Industries (OTTI), over 3 million U.S. residents traveled abroad in 2007. The top destinations were Asia (22%), Europe (39%), and the Caribbean (17%). Many area residents are traveling abroad for both leisure and business. If you are planning to travel abroad, it is recommended that you seek pre-travel counseling four to six weeks before departure.

“In the past year, we have seen an increase in the number of young adults leaving on humanitarian missions or to study abroad.” said Loren Pace, RN, travel clinic nurse. “This particular age group is at risk for food-borne illnesses or traveler’s diarrhea due to their adventurous dietary habits. I spend more time with young adults to review food and water precautions, sun safety, personal safety, and protective measures to prevent mosquito bites.” says Pace.

Proper pre-travel counseling and immunizations can help prevent travel related illnesses and ensure a safe and healthy travel experience.  For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 227-9571 ext. 243, Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
